Avacyn Says: We need to bring back fandom content

Updated: Feb 15

I miss the old days of fandom. I remember a time when any given fandom had a deluge of art and fanfic coming out every day, when Tumblr was filled with new art every single day, and fanfiction.net seemed truly infinite in its wellspring of content. I even miss when 4chan was a veritable treasure trove of art threads, where art by non-englush fans could get shared with new audiences.

I should lay down my bonifides: I grew up on 4chan, then Tumblr. I'm not about to formulate a defense for either of these websites; I was there when gamergate first sprung forth from the bowels of /b/ and /v/, and eventually the birth and rapid rise of /pol/, currently the site's number one board. So much harassment over some games and some reviews. I left 4chan in response to it's growing right wing element and took refuge on tumblr, just in time for death threats and harassment campaigns to be aimed at the BNFs of fandoms like Homestuck and Undertale.

I'm in no way naive to the deleterious effects fandom can have. The way fandom so readily leads to fanaticism, hell I've even had a few digital stalkers because of fanfics I've written.

And yet still, I think this era of polarized opinions, "AI" "art" and siloed patreons of art has made fandom fall to the wayside. The last big fandom I remember was My Hero Academia, and even though the anime for that is still ongoing, I don't see the activity that once had when I browse Tumblr or reddit. Squid Game was a huge phenomenon yet there were no discussion boards and ask blogs about it.

Anyways, this is all just waffle. Maybe I just miss the days when I could see new Danganronpa fan art every single day.
